Why?
The GDC’s Scope of Practice document states that dental hygienists and dental therapists can undertake the following tasks if they are appropriately trained, competent and indemnified.
•    Prescribe radiographs
•    Take, process, and interpret various film views used in general dental practice

Learning content
This course will provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out prescribing and interpreting radiographs within their scope of practice.


Aims and Objectives:
•    To understand the various positions of responsibility in relation to radiography within IRR17 and IR(ME)R17
•    To understand the principle of justification
•    To learn the task of completing a radiographic referral form
•    To appreciate the radiographic anatomy
•    To gain knowledge in quality assurance including radiographic errors
•    To comprehend the principles of radiographic interpretation
•    To appreciate the range of pathological conditions seen on conventional dental images
•    To learn the task of writing a radiographic report within the scope of practice

Development Outcomes:
Participants are expected by the end of the course to have gained the required knowledge and skills to prescribe and interpret radiographs with the scope of practice of a dental hygienist and a dental therapist.
This training will meet criteria C & D of the GDC’s Enhanced CPD requirements.

Portfolio
Participants are expected to complete a portfolio of 10 radiographs (only prescribing and interpreting) with the support of a dentist in the practice. This does not need to be submitted to us, but please keep a record of it for yourself.

Suitable for?
Qualified dental hygienists and therapists.
Can be suitable for Hygiene and therapy students once approved by their course organiser. Please ask our admin team.

Accreditation
The course is accredited by the British Society of Dental Hygiene & Therapy (BSDHT)

Delivery method:
This module is presented in an interactive series of e-learning lessons including multiple quizzes. This is a cool way to learn, but it does require that you complete all the learning activities in each section.  You can do this at your own pace, even a few minutes at a time. The system will track your progress and let you start exactly where you left off.
